Merle’s 50th anniversary and the month of women at the Regatta Hotel

In March this year, the Regatta celebrated the 50th anniversary of Merle Thornton’s famous protest at the Regatta Hotel and International Women’s Day with a Grand Ladies Luncheon on March 27th.   The Grand Ladies Luncheon was opened by Merle herself who spoke about her protest against the oppression of women which included a ban on drinking in public at the Regatta Hotel on March 31st, 1965. Merle received a standing ovation from the eager audience of women, and men, of all ages. Regatta Boatshed recently released its boldest menu yet with a variety of mouth-watering share plates in place of the traditional entrée dishes. With dishes like the Bourbon Braised Sticky Brisket and Chargrilled Souvlaki Lamb it’s no wonder the new menu has been so popular. “Share plates are really trendy at the moment, for obvious reasons. Regatta Hotel’s Annual Big Beef Off 2014

Regatta Hotel will celebrate its second annual Big Beef Off in the Boatshed restaurant on August 4, bringing together five of Queensland’s best beef producers (JBS, AACo, Stanbroke, Nolan and John Dee) for the tastiest competition of the year. Each producer has put forward their finest OP rib cuts, which are currently dry ageing on display in the Regatta’s Boatshed. Guests will be invited to blind-taste samples from each producer before voting for their favourite. What goes in a new menu?

Regatta Hotel recently released new menus for our Street Café and Boatshed, specially designed to suit the cooler weather, while still keeping the old favourites. The new menus were created by the Regatta’s Executive Chef, Daniel Fleming, and Sprit Hotel’s National Food Manager, Gary Johnson. To create the new menus the pair had to consider the availability of seasonal produce, loyalty to Queensland based suppliers and, of course, taste. 140 years of the Regatta marked by a week of celebrations

Regatta Hotel turned 140 years old last week and celebrated with a week of activities, which included historical tours, official naming of “Merle’s Bar”, a Whisk(e)y appreciation night, ANZAC Day two-up and breakfast and a VIP birthday party to cap it all off! Merle Thornton, a lady dear to Regatta Hotel, cut the ribbon to “Merle’s Bar”, in honour of her and Rosalie Bognor’s protest at the Regatta in 1965. Love is on display at Regatta Hotel, with the recent installation of a new cultural wall featuring artwork by renowned photographer Justine Walpole as part of the hotel’s new autumn look. Justine, who specialises in contemporary portraiture and live performance, has worked with a wide variety of famous faces, including Geoffrey Rush, Cameron Diaz and the late Heath Ledger. Justine’s most recent project has been working with legendary music icon, Prince. The week will include a special unveiling in “Merle’s Bar” from guest of honour Merle Thornton, who led a defiant women’s liberation protest at Regatta Hotel in 1965, a moment that became ingrained in the nation’s history as one of the first feminist insurgency movements.
